In a recent session at the Karnataka Assembly, Congress MLA Prasad Abbayya ignited a storm by proposing the renaming of Mysuru airport after Tipu Sultan. This move faced swift criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, who expressed their disagreement during discussions about the state government's plea to the Centre for airport name changes. The proposal, put forward by the Hubballi-Dharwad (East) MLA on Thursday, aimed to rename several airports in the state.

During the session, Abbayya outlined his suggestions, stating, "I propose the renaming of Mysuru airport to Tipu Sultan airport." He further disclosed plans to name Hubballi airport after Sangolli Rayanna, Belagavi Airport after Kittur Rani Chennamma, Shivamogga airport after Rashtrakavi Kuvempu, and Vijayapur Airport after Jagajyoti Basavanna. The proposal garnered attention, with Abbayya emphasizing that the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister MB Patil were actively considering and endorsing the recommendations, which would be forwarded to the central government.

The controversial move has sparked intense debates within the assembly, with opinions divided on whether historical figures should be associated with modern infrastructure. The Karnataka government is now contemplating the renaming of Belagavi airport after Kittur Rani Chennamma, while also considering similar changes for other airports, aligning with a broader initiative to honor the legacies of freedom fighters and prominent icons through symbolic nomenclature adjustments.
